Over 360 people applied for the 2014 Open Studio Residency at Haystack in Maine. Fifty residents—of which I was one—representing a broad range of disciplines, from 21 states and 4 countries, attended. We worked, foraged for fresh ideas, made discoveries, and shared generously—at meals, in our cabins, in the studios, on the decks in between, and along the shore and trails we were the momentary stewards of. It was the kind of generosity that did not require instruction or modeling or nurturing. It was a gift, rare and enduring, like our 2 weeks on Deer Isle. Photos top to bottom: view from the deck of Haystack upon arrival; from my sketchbook; drypoint; monotype; just a few of the "drowned islands" of Maine.
